Goal and Instructional Analysis


Goal

Instructor will demonstrate the ability to record a narrated Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 presentation using Camtasia Studio 7 PowerPoint Add-in by 1) setting up and testing a microphone to record audio 2) recording a narrated PowerPoint presentation reading a sample printed script aloud into a microphone 3) saving a recorded PowerPoint presentation to a video file format ready for online delivery.

Goals Analysis

In order to accomplish the instructional goal, instructors will need to accomplish the following tasks:

1. Set up and test a microphone for recording audio
2. Record spoken audio narration over a PowerPoint presentation reading from a sample printed script
3. Save PowerPoint presentation to video file format ready for online delivery

Type of Learning

The type of learning in this instructional analysis is mainly intellectual requiring instructors to apply existing concepts, rules, and procedures for using computers and computer applications to learning new procedural knowledge for using a new computer application. The parts that would be considered psychomotor would be parts that require the instructor to use a mouse, plug in a microphone, type on a keyboard, read text aloud, and speak aloud.

Required Material and Equipment

  • Computer with monitor, keyboard, and mouse
  • Computer operating system - Win XP
  • Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007
  • Camtasia Studio 7 - FREE trial version
  • Microphone with USB connector
  • Sample PowerPoint file
  • Sample printed script for narration

Entry Level Knowledge and Skills


  • The ability to use a mouse to interact with Microsoft Windows XP operating system GUI (graphical user interface) to perform the following tasks:
    • open files
    • select objects (click on buttons, icons, drop down menus, etc.)
    • navigate application menus
    • adjust audio volume from taskbar
    • close windows


  • The ability to type using a computer keyboard
  • The ability to identify a USB microphone connector
  • The ability to identify a USB port on computer
  • The ability to plug a USB microphone connector into a USB port on a computer
  • The ability to read aloud from a printed script into a microphone

1. Set up and Test Microphone


Entry Level Knowledge and Skills
  • The ability to use a mouse to interact with Microsoft Windows XP operating system GUI (graphical user interface) to perform the following tasks:
    • open file
    • select objects (click on buttons, icons, drop down menus, etc.)
    • navigate application menus
    • adjust audio volume from taskbar

  • The ability to plug a USB microphone connector into a USB port on a computer

1.1 Open sample PowerPoint file
1.1.1. Locate sample PowerPoint file on computer desktop
1.1.2. Double click PowerPoint file to open sample PowerPoint file on the computer desktop

1.2 Connect USB microphone to computer
1.2.1. Locate USB microphone
1.2.2. Locate USB microphone connector on USB microphone
1.2.3. Locate USB port on computer
1.2.4. Plug USB microphone connector into USB port on computer

1.3. Recognize Camtasia PowerPoint Add-in audio record option is activated
1.3.1. Locate PowerPoint application on computer desktop
1.3.2. Locate ribbon in PowerPoint application
1.3.3. Locate Add-ins tab in ribbon of PowerPoint application
1.3.4. Click Add-in tab in ribbon of PowerPoint application to display customs toolbars
1.3.5. Locate Camtasia PowerPoint Add-in custom tool bar in Add-in ribbon
1.3.6. Locate microphone icon in the Camtasia PowerPoint Add-in custom tool bar
1.3.7. Recognize PowerPoint Add-in audio record option is activated when microphone icon is surrounded by an orange box then proceed to step 1.4
1.3.7.a Recognize microphone icon is not surrounded by an orange box, click microphone icon to activate Camtasia PowerPoint Add-in audio recording option then proceed to step 1.4

1.4. Select Camtasia PowerPoint Add-in audio recording device
1.4.1. Locate Camtasia PowerPoint Add-in custom tool bar in the Add-in ribbon
1.4.2. Locate Camtasia Studio recording options icon in Camtasia PowerPoint Add-in custom tool bar
1.4.3. Click Camtasia Studio recording options icon to open Camtasia Studio recording options window
1.4.4. Locate Camtasia Studio recording options window on computer desktop
1.4.5. Locate Video and Audio section in Camtasia Studio recording options window
1.4.6. Locate Audio Source drop down menu in Video and Audio section
1.4.7. Click Audio Source drop down button to open Audio Source drop down menu displaying list of audio devices connected to computer
1.4.8. Identify USB microphone plugged into the computer from list of audio devices by USB in the name of the audio device
1.4.9. Select audio device with USB in the name of the audio device

1.5. Test microphone to determine audio device is receiving audio input
1.5.1. Position microphone to receive audio when speaking aloud
1.5.2. Locate audio recording level box in Camtasia Studio recording options window
1.5.3. Speak into microphone in normal voice
1.5.4. Recognize microphone is receiving audio when color bar appears in audio recording level box

1.6. Adjust Camtasia PowerPoint Add-in audio recording volume level
1.6.1. Locate Volume adjustment slider bar in Camtasia Studio recording options window
1.6.2. Speak naturally into microphone
1.6.3. Click on volume adjustment slider and move until a solid green bar fills approximately 1/2 of audio recording level box
1.6.4. Locate the OK button in the Camtasia Studio recording options window
1.6.5. Click the OK button in the Camtasia Studio recording options window to close the window, then proceed to step 2

2. Record Spoken Audio over PowerPoint Presentation

2.1. Launch sample PowerPoint file and open Camtasia Studio Recording window
2.1.1. Locate Camtasia PowerPoint Add-in custom tool bar in the Add-in ribbon
2.1.2. Locate Record icon in Camtasia PowerPoint Add-in custom tool bar
2.1.3. Click Record icon to launch sample PowerPoint slide show presentation and open Camtasia Studio Recording window

2.2. Record spoken audio narration over sample PowerPoint presentation slides
2.2.1. Locate sample printed script
2.2.2. Locate Camtasia Studio Recording window on computer desktop
2.2.3. Locate "Click to begin recording" button in Camtasia Studio Recording window
2.2.4. Click "Click to begin recording button" to start PowerPoint presentation and begin recording audio
2.2.5. Narrate first slide
2.2.5.a. Locate block of text labeled 1 on sample printed script
2.2.5.b. Read block of text labeled 1 into the microphone with normal speaking voice until finished
2.2.6. Advance to next slide
2.2.6.a .Locate arrow keys on computer keyboard
2.2.6.b. Press right arrow key on keyboard to advance PowerPoint presentation to next slide
2.2.7. Narrate second slide
2.2.7.a. Locate block of text labeled 2 on sample printed script
2.2.7.b. Read block of text labeled 2 into the microphone with normal speaking voice until finished
2.2.8. Advance to next slide
2.2.8.a. Locate arrow keys on computer keyboard
2.2.8.b. Press right arrow key on keyboard to advance PowerPoint presentation to next slide
2.2.9. Narrate third slide
2.2.9.a. Locate block of text labeled 3 on sample printed script
2.2.9.b. Read block of text labeled 3 into the microphone with normal speaking voice until finished

2.3. Stop recording
2.3.1. Locate ESC key on computer keyboard
2.3.2. Press ESC key on computer keyboard to open Save Camtasia Recording As... window

3. Save Sample Presentation in file format ready for online delivery

3.1. Save recorded narrated sample PowerPoint presentation
3.1.1 Locate Save Camtasia Recording As... window on computer desktop
3.1.2. Locate File name field in Save Camtasia Recording As... window
3.1.3. Type "Sample Presentation" in the File name field
3.1.4. Locate Save button in Save Camtasia Recording As... window
3.1.5. Click Save button to open Camtasia Studio for PowerPoint window
3.1.6. Locate Camtasia Studio for PowerPoint window on computer desktop
3.1.7. Locate "Edit your recording option" radio button in Camtasia Studio for PowerPoint window
3.1.8. Select "Edit your recording option" radio button in Camtasia Studio for PowerPoint window
3.1.9. Locate OK button in Camtasia Studio for PowerPoint window
3.1.10. Click OK button to launch Camtasia Studio application and open Camtasia Studio Evaluation window

3.2. Activate trial version of Camtasia Studio 7 application
3.2.1. Locate Camtasia Studio Evaluation window on computer desktop
3.2.2. Locate Finish button in Camtasia Studio Evaluation window
3.2.3. Click Finish button, to open Camtasia application window and Editing Dimensions window

3.3. Set recorded sample PowerPoint presentation video dimensions
3.3.1. Locate Editing Dimensions window on computer desktop
3.3.2. Locate Dimensions drop down menu in Editing Dimensions window
3.3.3. Click Dimensions drop down menu button to display list of dimensions
3.3.4. Locate "800 x 600 full screen viewing" option in Dimensions drop down menu
3.3.5. Click "800 x 600 full screen viewing" option in Dimensions drop down menu
3.3.6. Locate OK button in Editing Dimensions window
3.3.7. Click OK button in Editing Dimensions window to save selection and close Editing Dimensions window

3.4. Produce recorded sample PowerPoint presentation video
3.4.1. Locate Camtasia application window on computer desktop
3.4.2. Locate Produce and Share drop down menu in Camtasia application window
3.4.3. Click Produce and Share drop down menu in Camtasia application window to open Production Wizard window
3.4.4. Locate Production Wizard window on computer desktop
3.4.5. Locate drop down menu in Production Wizard window
3.4.6. Click drop down menu in Production Wizard window to open drop down menu and display production options
3.4.7. Locate CD option in Production Wizard window drop down menu
3.4.8. Click CD option in Production Wizard window drop down menu
3.4.9. Locate Next button at bottom of Production Wizard pop up window
3.4.10. Click OK button to advance to next screen in Production Wizard window

3.5. Save recorded sample PowerPoint presentation video
3.5.1. Locate Production name field in Production Wizard window
3.5.2. Type "Sample Presentation" in Production name field
3.5.3. Locate Finish button in Production Wizard window
3.5.4. Click Finish button to begin rendering video, when computer is finished rendering video Camtasia player window will automatically open and play recorded narrated PowerPoint presentation video

3.6. Complete saving process of narrated Sample Presentation file
3.6.1. Close Camtasia player window
3.6.1.a. Locate Camtasia player window on computer desktop
3.6.1.b. Locate close button in Camtasia player window title bar
3.6.1.c. Click close buton to close Camtasia player window
3.6.2. Close Production Results window on computer desktop
3.6.2.a. Locate Production Results window on computer desktop
3.6.2.b. Locate Finish button in Production Results window
3.6.2.c. Click Finish button in Production Results window
